Hashimoto Thyroiditis

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) in the United States. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, leading to chronic inflammation and reduced thyroid function over time. As the thyroid becomes damaged, it produces fewer hormones, slowing down many of the body’s processes.

Hashimoto’s can affect people of all ages, but it is most common in middle-aged women. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are key to managing symptoms and maintaining long-term health.

  • Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition, meaning the body’s immune system targets its own tissue, in this case, the thyroid gland. The exact cause is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute:

    • Genetics – family history increases the risk

    • Gender – women are more likely to be affected than men

    • Age – often diagnosed in adults between 30 and 60

    • Other autoimmune diseases – such as type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, or lupus

    • Excess iodine intake

    • Radiation exposure

Over time, the immune attack damages the thyroid gland, reducing its ability to produce hormones and often leading to permanent hypothyroidism.

  • In the early stages, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may cause no noticeable symptoms. As thyroid function declines, symptoms of hypothyroidism may begin to appear, including:

    • Fatigue or sluggishness

    • Weight gain

    • Cold sensitivity

    • Constipation

    • Dry skin and brittle hair

    • Depression or mood changes

    • Memory or concentration problems (“brain fog”)

    • Puffy face

    • Hoarseness

    • Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)

    • Menstrual irregularities or fertility issues

Because these symptoms can develop slowly, many patients may not realize they are related to thyroid function.

  • There is no cure for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, but it is easily managed with proper treatment. At North Texas Diabetes & Endocrinology, we take a personalized approach to care that includes:

    • Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy: The standard treatment is a daily dose of synthetic thyroid hormone (levothyroxine) to restore normal hormone levels and relieve symptoms of hypothyroidism.

    • Ongoing Monitoring: We regularly check thyroid hormone (TSH, T4) levels and adjust medication as needed to ensure optimal balance, especially during life changes such as pregnancy or aging.

    • Management of Related Conditions: Many people with Hashimoto’s have other autoimmune disorders. We provide comprehensive care to address related concerns and support your overall health.

    • Nutritional and Lifestyle Guidance: While medication is the cornerstone of treatment, we also help patients with diet and lifestyle changes that support thyroid function and general wellness.
